Talking about Brexit in the workplace has become a taboo. Its discouraged as what can start off as harmless conversation ends up in heated debates. No matter your political views, we all know that whatever the outcome – whatever the end deal is – businesses will be affected. As a recruitment company, we are reminded of this daily. Both current and potential clients have expressed fear of hiring until something more substantial is in place. We understand acting in a period of uncertainty can be scary.
On the other hand, there is risk in every factor of a business. Taking risks is what gets results. The fear of Brexit has not only resulted in businesses drawing back, but also in the industry pushing forward. With the construction industry under government review, more has come to light of the state we are dealing with. Despite fears, SMEs are standing strong, with FMB director Gordon Nelson stating that “now is no time” to be complacent. With Scottish unemployment rates sitting as low as 3.7% in December 2018, it is clear that hiring should not be the main risk a business should fear. The Engineering and Construction industries, along with Gas and Oil, must act to continue climbing the ladder as a significant trade in Scotland.
The Construction industry is showing an exemplary increase of work with an output of 2.1% and new work rising by 3.4%, with Maintenance work only falling by 0.4%. The industries are booming with a need to work, so why not hire? Some argue that “Brexit is blinding us” with so much fear that it is slowing passion to gain work as well as to offer work. The fear that spending money on new hires will put your business into trouble is a misconception of business risks. Saving money means cutting back on spending of luxuries, ensuring you are an insured company, contributing risk management as a priority and keeping accounts low. Employing a candidate to provide you with the essential company needs should not be regarded as damaging towards your business. You could also benefit from requesting a temporary employee.
Political change will always be here to affect your business. That is a fact. However, taking risks in life results in a more flourishing business.
